  1. I've been happily running Premiere 6.0 on a Windows XP system for months with no problems, but an annoying problem has developed recently. Whenever I try to open one of the DV Project Settings the application freezes before the timeline window opens properly, forcing me to shut it down via CTRL-ALT-DEL.

This is a recent development and is annoyingly also stopping me from opening premiere project files created before the problem came up (they freeze in the same way). I tried reinstalling the application with no luck, and I've just tried removing all the codecs on the machine with Device Manager in case that was the cause; no change.

Reinstalling Windows would probably fix it but that's a bit drastic. So, if this rings any bells for anyone or they have an idea of the cause, any help would be much appreciated.

    The Meddler,

Had the same problem with Premier 6.5 on WinXP. When selecting DV-NTSC on the first screen, it would lockup before the time line window appeared. Tired several times with same results.

After selecting NTSC 720x480 Video for Windows, the time line window came up and was able to load a DV file and change the Porject settings to DV. The program has been working fine ever since.

    Hopes this helps,

    Chas

  3. Thanks for the reply Megahurts. Premiere does indeed work if I start a new project that isn't one of the DV settings, which is of some help. Unfortunately, I still can't open any of the DV projects I'd been working on as they also cause the mysterious freeze.

I'm a bit stumped as to the cause. It doesn't seem to be a damaged installation or a codec conflict.

  4. Happily, I've just solved this problem. I thought I'd add the details here in case anybody else is having the same trouble.

As far as I can ascertain, the freezing upon startup is caused by some newer codecs conflicting with Premiere 6. If you downloaded and installed a codec pack then that's most likely the cause. Uninstall it then Premiere should work again.

You have to remove the codecs properly via Add/Remove Programs, don't simply remove them via the System option in Control Panel.

    Hope that helps.[/i]
