  1. I just bought a Eclipse mp3/navigation/dvd player (AVN 2454) for my car and am trying to figure out exactly how it names its song titles in the mp3 mode. It is a touch screen so in cases where I have a lot of mp3's by the same artist, it seems to have a funny way of naming and numbering the songs.

For example on my "Jimmy Eat World" mp3's, it lists the buttons (touch the button and it plays the song) as:
    Jimmy_EA
    Jimmy_E2
    Jimmy_E3
    Jimmy_E4
    Jimmy_E5
    Jimmy_E6
    Jimmy_E7
    Jimmy_E8
    Jimmy_E9
    Jimmy_10
Jimmy_11...and all the way to Jimmy_22

The Jimmy_EA file starts at songs titled with an "A" and the Jimmy_22 file is the one ending in "Z" So basically I figured that it lists the songs alphabetically with Jimmy_EA first to Jimmy_22 last. So if I wanted a song titled "A Praise Chorus", I would assume it is the Jimmy_EA or Jimmy_E2 file. If I wanted a song titled "The Authority Song", I would assume it would be at the end Jimmy_21 or Jimmy_22 file.
QUESTION: Why doesnt it just list Jimmy_01 to Jimmy_22 instead of the weird lettering of "E's"?

Then just when I thought I figured it out how the deck worked, I looked at another artist "Fink". It orders it as the following names:
    Fink__2
    Fink__3
    Fink__4
    Fink__5
    Fink__6
    Fink__7

    Fink__B
    Fink__D
    Fink__E
    Fink__F
    Fink__J
    Fink__N

So following the same idea as the "Jimmy Eat World", I thought Fink__B would be the songs titles that started with an "A" or "B" (one of the beginning letters of the alphabet) and ending with Fink__7. But instead, the number groups Fink__2 through Fink__7 had their own group of songs titled A through Z while the other group Fink__B through Fink__N had their own group of songs titled A through Z. I couldn't understand how the deck picked and labeled it. All songs are from the same album.

It's almost as if it randomly assigned a selected few songs to one group (Fink__2 through Fink__7) and a selected few songs to the other group (Fink__B through Fink__N) and then alphabetized it within. This doesn't match how the previous example (Jimmy Eat World) was set up.

Sometimes there is some consistency but other times its completely random. Does anyone have experience as to why this is so? I checked the manual but it doesnt indicate how it is assigned. I label and name all my songs perfectly in Nero in ISO mode, so it is not a Nero issue. I tried calling Eclipse but the reps werent exactly sure either.

    Thanks

Looks like the old joilet format. 8 character limit. You may try to create a folder with the artist name and in that directory put the name of the song as the title.

  3. Garman,

Thats exactly what I did, except that the deck doesnt display the titles. It has some random way of naming the files with number extensions 02, 03, 04, etc and also with letters like the E2, E3, E4.... BUT no 01 or E1 for some weird reason. Thats what I cant figure out the logic behind it.

As with the case of the Jimmy Eat World, it alphabetized the songs starting with the Jimmy_EA selection and ending with the Jimmy_22 selection.
But with the Fink selection, it separated the groups into 1) lettering and 2) numbering and then alphabatized the songs within the groups. But there is no way of figuring out exactly HOW it chose its songs. I thought maybe it grouped it by album, but its the same album.

The selection buttons are limited to 8 characters. It's just that when I want to play a particular song, I dont know which one to touch select since it only displays the letter or number like Jimmy_EA, Jimmy_11, Jimmy_20, etc. If it is somewhat alphabatized like "Jimmy Eat World", then I can kinda figure out where to select the song. Song titles "A" through "K" will be in the beginning, song titles "O" through "Z" will be towards the end.
But in the case of "Fink" where it randonly picks two groupings and splits the songs, it's a guessing game. I am just trying to understand the method behind how it does things with one artist versus another artist.

Sorry man that was my last kick at the can. My dvd player exhibited the same problem as yours, I had to rename all my files with a # first and that has fixed my problem. Did you try to look for a firmware fix?

  7. no I havent done that. I wonder if its just a random functionality of Eclipse?

I think player tags the name the way it sees it first. So it may not have a true alphabetical reader. How about putting all the files in one folder and see how it recognizes it "alphabetically" -garman
Oh BTW are the files on a DVD or CD media. I recall my player did not suffer the problem on a CD media as apposed to DVD media, far less files and structures for the DVD to read.

  9. i burned them alphabetically by title on a cd-r. It just doenst always align them alphabetically, as you can see by the numbering scheme.

Ah yes the "WTF Ever it decides" method of reading. Yeah I hate alot of the earlier car MP3 units who were horrible about this.
