  1. is it possible to do 24 frame xvid to 25 frame pal without it becoming jerky and what software if any can do this?

  2. Hi-

Yes. Open the AVI in VirtualDub(Mod) (hitting "No" if it gives you a message about improper VBR MP3 audio), set the Video for Direct Stream Copy, and go Video->Frame rate->Change to 25 frames per second. Then go File->Save As, give it a new name, and wait a minute or so.

That will speed up the video to 25fps. You'll also have to extract and speed up the audio as it will have become out of synch with the video.

  4. Hi-

Extract the audio, open it in BeSweet, use the NTSC to PAL 23.976->25 Preset, and convert to whatever you want (probably the same as original). This assumes the original framerate is really 23.976fps, and not 24fps as you originally stated. If it's really 24fps, then use the "Change Framerate" just above. Then replace the old audio in the AVI with the new audio.

And say "thank you" to the nice man, or I won't answer your next question.

  6. Hi-

Of course you can, but there's work involved probably. If you have a DVD/MPEG-4 player, you can burn that AVI to CD or DVDR and it will probably play in that player. If you have only a DVD player, without AVI capability, then you either watch your AVI on a computer, connect your computer to the TV with a video-out cable from your video card, or you can convert that AVI back to DVD.

There are plenty of guides around this site that show you how to do this using various software. Of course, that DVD made from the AVI won't be of nearly the same quality as the original DVD. It's been converted first from MPEG-2 DVD to MPEG-4 AVI (DivX or XviD usually), and now you have to encode it yet again to get it back to MPEG-2, probably reencode the audio as well to get it back to AC3 (or LPCM or MP2), and then author the whole thing for DVD, maybe also creating a menu and chapters. All this encoding and reencoding degrades the video and audio at each step. Plenty of people on this site do this though, and if you'd like to try, then have a look at the guides.

Before spending too much effort on converting NTSC to PAL, check out your player's capabilities. Most PAL systems are more flexible than their NTSC counterparts, and will playback NTSC video. I never do format conversions because all my PAL kit will play back NTSC without issue.

  12. If it's a 24fps M2V after being encoded, and with PAL DVD resolution of 720x576, use DGPulldown with the custom setting of 24->25 and then author it as a PAL DVD. The audio can stay the same length, but must be in a DVD compatible format, such as AC3, WAV, or MP2.

Never heard of honestech video encoder, so I can't help there.
