  1. I'm sure a lot of us want to know this, and I'm not sure if this has been asked yet..Does ANYONE know where to find Maxell Made in JAPAN DVD-R discs in Canada? they seem so rare and hard to find. Its ALWAYS made in Taiwan. Help us out a little if you know where to go.

I just bought a spool tonight from Futureshop. Check the label. There should be a "Made In Japan" label over the :Made In Taiwan" one. DVD Identifier and DVD Decryptor both identify these as MXL RG03...

This seems to be a very recent development. I just noticed them this week at the downtown Montreal Future Shop. It seems as if Maxell may have resumed selling Japanese made discs. It would be nice if this became the norm again.

the general public opinion is that disks made in japan are far superior than others made elsewhere. better quality control and better materials. people are experiencing much greater success as far as burning and/or playback is concerned.

I was at the Best Buy in St Catharines (Ontario) this afternoon. The 50 pk 8xs are on sale and were all MIT both - and +, as were the 25 pks.

They did have some 100 pks of the 8x dvd-r that were MIJ mixed in with some MIT, the DVD+R that were on the shelf were MIT though.

I grabbed a 100 pk of the MIJ, they were $8 more than 2 of the 50pks on sale but I figured I'd go for the MIJ.

Are you sure it wasn't +R? I just came from walmart. The manager told me she's only seen Made in Taiwan Maxell -R. Plenty of MIJ Maxell +R there.

I was just at Best Buy again today and they have the Maxell 100pks on for $24.99(cdn). I grabbed two spindles of MIJ and had the spindle I bought last week for $39.99 adjusted to $24.99 .

The sales only on for a few more days though.

That's why you check the media code with DVD Identifier. If they come up Ritek take them back.

I'll certainly be taking a trip to both Walmart and Bestbuy soon.

The spindle I bought last week (see above post by me with Disc ID) was with a MIJ sticker over the MIT one.

I just opened one of the two spindles I bought yesterday. It reads the same

Those were probably Taiwan discs with the old packaging that have MIJ printed on the wrapper and the "Made in Taiwan" sticker that should have been over it came off. Now the opposite is happening; the default packaging says MIT and some MIJ discs are being shipped so now the need for a "Made in Japan" sticker. Maxell isn't trying to intentionally mislead here folks.

MIJ DVD-R x8 Maxell spindles at Walmart CONFIRMED. Futureshop ONLY has MIT. $27.77CAD price makes them a great deal. You just have to really dig for the MIJ discs through all the MIT spindles. Thanks guys.

Did the label say "Made In Japan"? If it said "Made In Taiwan" it is definitely Ritek. That's why this thread is about the "Made In Japan" discs...

You know, I've summised that there's a lot deceipt behind this Maxell shit buisness. Couple of days ago bought a 10+1 slim jewelcase pack of DVd-r's which were MXL RG03's and were fine. Today went back and bought two more IDENTICAL packs from the same place, but when I stuck one in Nero to burn, I wasn't getting a burn speed readout. Thought "something funny going on here". Check the media code and lo-and-behold effing Ritek G05, again ! Shit-shit-shit. Thats the only printable expression I can repeat here. They are mixing the Ritek shit with genuine Maxells in the identical packs and conning people into buying them. These batches I'm told, are coming via UK distributers. Went back and exchanged them for the dvd+r's in the same packs, which show as Maxell 002's.

In summary, I'm shit pissed off with Maxells for constantly wasteing my time and trying to rip me off cos thats exactly what they're doing, only the Maxell dvd+r's seem to be a safe bet at the moment, the -r's are on my behalf to be avoided cos you can't even trust what the "Made in...." is telling you. Its not worth anyone buying Maxell dvd-r's unless you specifically want Riteks.

  23. If that is true, Maxell could get into some serious trouble. Someone should expose them. There needs to be a law put in place that would make them put the dye media code on all packages. So you can see what you're buying before opening it up. Good thing I bought a lot of Maxell DVD-R last year. I checked my packs and they are MXL that are MIJ. Can't even find MIJ anymore at Fry's or any other retailer.

This sort of thing is exactly why I buy my media from a retailer like blankmedia.ca. If I select Taiyo Yuden media, I know I'm going to get TY media; I don't have to pick through stock in a store and hope I'm getting a good set of blanks.

  25. If it helps, I have been buying Maxell made in Japan discs (printed on label wrapper) for a few months now (this includes last night) at Sears. Each time the media code is giving the made in japan confirmation (mxl). If anyone can, give a sears store a try. It has been the only place by me where I can still find these discs (Japan).
