I have a NTSC divx video that I need to put on a PAL DVD. I have read many of the tutorials here and I don't understand why they are so complex. I will write my workflow here and maybe someone can tell me if there is something wrong with it.

    1. Open in Virtual Dub. Resize the video to 720 x 390 and letter box the height.
    2. Add an unsharp mask filter
    3. Save as AVI with audio
    4. Open in Main Concepts Mpeg. Select PAL and encode as mpeg with audio layer 2

I have read tutorials using these two pieces of software that talk about saving the audio seperately as a wav file. Converting that with BSweet. Converting the frame rate in Virtual Dub etc. I don't understand why all of this should be necessary. I could actually letterbox the video in Main Concepts but I like to put an unsharp mask filter on the resized video so I use Virtual dub for the resize and letter box. In theory I could frameserve from VDub to MainConcept but I haven't gotten that to work as of yet.

Anyone with an opinion, please contribute.

    Thanks.

I'd imagine it's because the encoder is doing the framerate conversion for you.... That's the single biggest issue.

  5. The encoder will probably just duplicate 1 frame out of every 25 to convert from 23.976 to 25 fps. The result will be a noticable jerk every second. Even worse things will happen if your NTSC video is 29.97 fps interlaced.

Is the Mainconcept Mpeg2 encoder capable of NTSC to PAL conversion at all? I've never seen this discussed.

Don't convert. Just make an NTSC DVD. Your player should play it just fine.

The best tool for this type of conversion is ulead video studio , pickup any se edition in ebay for around $35.00au , get hold of version 8 .

I have never had any problems with this type of conversion using ulead video studio , and its the only tool that dose it properly .

Most other tools simply re-write the frames in the header as far as I am aware , which will cause the video to play fast or slow , depending on which conversion is being performed .

25 to 23 , should be slower playback
29 to 25 , should be faster playback

Just go with ulead video studio 8 se , it will save you a hell of alot of mucking about ...
