Lately I've downloaded a couple of AVI/MPG files that have been giving me trouble after cutting them. Ive tried boilsoft avi splitter and TMPG. The source file plays fine, but after it is split the audio is out of synch with the video by about 5 seconds. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm not sure what a AVI/MPG file is. But the main question is why are you splitting it? MPEG is difficult to edit and you can end up with sync problems. MPEG-VCR or Cuttermaran do a good job. Not splitting is a better idea unless you really have to.

For AVI, I use VirtualDub most of the time for editing. Certain types of audio in a video file can also cause sync problems if not handled properly. AC3 and MP3 VBR are two good examples. If you are working with Xvid or Divx, put the video into Gspot and check the audio format.

For VBR audio, I would save out the audio with VirtualDub as a WAV, then either add it back in or change it to CBR audio and add it in before you try any editing. That may be the basis of your editing problem. TMPGEnc for one chokes on VBR audio. VD should tell you the VBR problem as soon as you try to open it.

MP3 VBR - the most evil audio format in the known universe. The cause of most avi conversion/editing headaches.
