I just picked up a unit and connected it. It lights up (HDD) and shows an L1 on the DVR, but nothing happens when I press any of the buttons. Disk eject, power, nothing. Does this sound right?

You can reset the unit as follows. Make sure it is on, then press and hold STOP ( the little black square ) and press STANDBY/ON.
It should turn off with all settings reset. -
It did not appear to do anything. HDD light is still on, time is still present and L1 is displayed.

If reset did not turn it off. it does sound bad. Can you return or exchange it? I bought a bad recorder off eBay once but they still allowed me to return it.
[edit] you did the reset from the front panel I assume and not from the remote -
Ok, finally got a new one in and so far so good. My question, are DirecTV channels scrambled? I believe they are. If so, I have to setup my DVR a bit differently.
