  1. I am looking for recommendation for an 5.25" external enclosure with USB 2.0 and Firewire interface that will be able to support the "full" 16x WRITE speed for a DVD Writer.

    Thanks.

I currently own a BYTECC ME-320X which is both USB and firewire. I use it as a USB enclosure for my NEC ND-3540A and I am able to successfully burn 16X Verbatim (MCC disks) at 16X.

    This is it here: http://www.dealsonic.com/bymeblcofi13.html

or here at Newegg. It's a little cheaper at Newegg I think: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145346

  3. The enclosure is not the critical element, the chipset is. You need a Prolific 3507 chipset to be able to burn at 16X.

The Plumax case from Dealsonic works on most drives.

Still a few bugs in the system...

It also depends on the FireWire/USB chipset/card in the PC. Some ones just won't cut it at 16X (or even 8X).

It's easy to determine when burning DVDs/CDs if the device buffer bounces at zero and the buffer underrun technology keeps kicking in -- then there is a problem.

First I have ever heard of that on a non-defective port. I suppose some sort of conflicted system could do that but I wouldn't expect a working port to be that slow, other than USB 1.1.
