I'm new to DVD's, so if someone has an opinion on the following it would be great. I'm planning on copying some DVD's to VCD, but I'm wondering about DVD's that are only encoded for "region 2", i.e. Asia and Europe. I understand that these can't be played on most stand-alone DVD's in North America but that they can be played on DVD-Roms on PC's. So if I burn these region 2 DVD's, is there a way to get rid of the "region 2" encoding at the same time?.... Thanks!

Well the answer U wanna here is YES! & it is yes!!
ripping the dvd does not take the region coding across. The only problem U will have with the finished mpeg that is if U R ripping it, it will be pal 352*288 at 25fps. To do a quick and good copy without using tmpeg as it sometimes frame skips on R2 dvd's use DVDx. There is a guide for dvdx on this website. I hope this was usefull. If U R ripping to another dvd ie copying the exact dvd to another dvd disk most ripping progs will remove the region coding & macro if U want it to.

depends on the length.
r u ripping anime dvds?
they r the majority of Region 2's I know about -
will it all ddpends n what you are encodeing and the lenth if your movie is like 95mins or lower you can try XVCD this will fit any 95 min movie to single 80min CDR but it is not guaranteed becuase movies are diffrent and they will be compressed diffrently.....but if you are doing Anime i dont suggest XVCD anime is very stuborn and you wil gget bad results doing XVCD with anime so that suggested to put in two or if it is hort ebough one

I'm also new and interested in converting DVDs from another region to VCD. There's a DVD in Italy of tv episodes that I'd like to get but my DVD player can't be converted (I guess).
Anyhoo, my question is, can I convert a PAL mpg to an NTSC before putting it onto VCD? If the ripped dvd results in 352*288, isn't that too small to fit NTSC's 640*480? -
SloanFan,make a short test first (like 5 mins.)burn and play it in your player. If you intend to play in in your standalone player, you've to stick to vcd/svcd template. Unless you're going to play it in your computer, then you have more freedom to choose the compression.
superSketcher,NTSC-VCD is 352*240 and to my knowledge, standalone vcd player is multy system. I never have any problem playing ntsc or pal vcd in my standalone vcd & dvd player
