  1. I have converted 26 movies into DVD(mpeg2), but now realizing I need the subs hard coded.

Would it be easier/faster to reencode these into DVD with the subs from DIVX, or can I add the subs into the MPEG2?

Ive looked for the latter with no luck, so im assuming i have to reconvert them all which sucks.

    Any help thanks

virtualdub-mpeg2 and textsub and frameserve to an encoder.

avisynth and textsub and frameserve to and encoder.

ffdshow and enable subs and enable it for all video decoding and encode.

To re-encode from Divx to DVD with permanent subtitle.

If you have DVD authoring software that support subtitle, then you do not re-encode from Divx to DVD. One such software that support subtilte is DVDLab Pro.

  4. that didnt make a whole lot of sense, but from what Im gathering is: its a long process to add to an mpeg, better to just add to avi and reencode?

  5. Yeah pchan I know im using DVDLab Pro, but because what im authoring is a foreign film, and my dvd player refuses to put on subs by default im forced to do it this way (see post in caption from last week+)

  9. Well, if you already have selectable subs on the DVD, but are too damn lazy to use the remote to turn them on, then you can always make them play by default:

    https://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/2cool/subtitles/subtitles_on_default_pgcedit.htm

That'll take a bit more work than using the remote, although still much easier and faster than reencoding. In my opinion though, burning the subs into the video is a lousy idea.

  10. the subs are turned on by default, and its not that im lazy, its just that my dvdplayer is overwriting my dvd settings. So I put subs on by def and they wont come on in my dvd player but will in others.

    Understand now?

Yes, and it's something you might have mentioned in your original post. This sounds like a player issue to me. Mine has such a setting, "Subtitles=Off". Maybe yours does too. If it does, turn them on again. Of course, you might find that the movies where you don't want subs suddenly have them (probably not, though).

And it's still a lousy idea to reencode with the subs being burned into the video. Not only will it degrade the overall quality of the video because of the extra bitrate that subs require to maintain the same quality, but noise will be created around the subs.

  12. Thinking about it some more. I have my subs set for Off in my DVD player's Setup menu, and they only play when I've set the menu in PGCEdit to turn them on automatically. Following that guide to which I linked earlier does that for me. I was foolling around with my player a few minutes ago, and when I set the subs for Auto, I always get subs, even when I don't want them. Your player may be different. If it does have a Subs setting, then, if I were you, I'd play around with that setting, and test some DVDs to see under what conditions the subs are turned on. Maybe you've already done that.

Next, if you want the subs turned on for sure, there a part of that guide down near the bottom that will set a PUO for that particular DVD, override your player settings, and always turn the subs on. It begins:

OPTIONAL: If you want your subpicture permanently ON and your remote's subpictures button disabled, just double-click on your PGC Title again and click on Prohibited User Operations
So, assuming you set the subs properly to play automatically in the menu (check the guide and compare with your menu in PGCEdit), and you still can't make it work with your player, perhaps follow the last part of the guide to set a PUO for them.
