I bought some blank DVDs from CompUSA and only after having problems read up on everything and realized how stupid that was. (got info from here and nomorecoasters.com)

I got the media info using DVDinfopro:
    ID - RICOHJPNR03
    Manufacturer Rated Speed - 16.0x 22160KBp
    Available Write Descriptor - CLV 4.0x 5540KBps
    Available Write Descriptor - CLV 2.4x 3324KBps
    (Memorex +R)

As I understand it, this media is mislabeled. It's says it is 16x on the disk and packaging, but the disc itself says it can only burn up to 4x. Am I right about this? Is it just blatantly lying? Is this info straight from the media? There's no way my firmware could just not have it listed and that could be the problem?

Firmware and max drive hardware speed could be a factor, yes.

So the info from DVDInfoPro is not just what is on the disc. Some of it is interpreted depending on my burner and firmware - like the 'available write descriptor'.

    Drives are stupid. Dimwitted.

A 4x drive, for example, only knows a few set speeds, 1x, 2x, 2.4x, 4x. Something like 8x is not understood. Sort of like a caveman looking at a computer, it's alien.

So when a drive calls a 16x disc a 4x disc, it's only going off what it can comprehend.

This only affects speeds, nothing else.
