  1. Hi
I would like to convert some DVD files into an avi Xvid or DivX
I did some search in the guide section and there is a bunch of them.
My question before a start to read few of these guide would be this:
What software you would recommand to convert DVD into avi files ?

It's just that there is so much that I want to search some guide about a specific software that some of you already used and like...

    Thanx a lot

You can use virtualdub or dvdx. dvdx is pretty straightforward. There are plenty of guides here. Just experiment a little.

Why must it be only one?
What's wrong with 2 pieces of free/easy software?

I'm interested in this as well, but when I tried it in the past using AutoGK
the resulting .avi files could not be imported into Premiere Pro for editing.

Will the tools suggested in this thread so far create "standard" .avi files
that can be edited in with .avi files created through 1394 camcorder captures?

  7. It's not that it is wrong ... it's just that I prefer to have only one main tools
    instead of multiples ones.

I could never get FairUse Wizard to work.

    I like AutoGK.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  10. Try the new release of FU 2.2 or something
Being able to use 1 program to convert to Divx or Xvid is awesome.

  11. And to take advantage of all its features you have to pay money.

AutoGK is the way to go. Free and easy.

FairUse Wizard is OK and easy to use but DVD2avi with virtualdub will give you a bit better quality
AutoGK is too complicated no good for beginner

AutoGK or AVI.net are my recommendations. AutoGK gives you somewhat more control over your end result. But if you're going to further edit (like Zen of Encoding), I'd not recommend DivX/XviD as source, since it's heavily compressed (and you're likely to have to recompress again after your edits, losing quality twice).
