  2. Don't hold your breath.
If you really want color, buy an inkjet.

  5. I wouldn't expect it in our lifetime - you're talking about burning a surface layer like you are when writing a disc - and how many different colours can you get on one recordable layer... ?

If you wanted more than one colour you're talking about burning different densities to get the colour(s) underneath, then the issue of how to achieve colours that aren't 100% one shade.

I think it's a novel idea but will go the same way as Yamaha's Disc T@2...

Who says it would have to be filtered color. the disc could be coated with a substance that would change colors based on what intensity laser they were hit with. Just a thought but I totally agree, why would you want something slow and costly when you can run out and buy a DVD printer for less than a hundred bucks and be done with it.
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!

    This about color LightScribe: http://www.cdfreaks.com/news2.php?ID=12346

Or from the LightScribe website, a PDF: http://www.lightscribe.com/files/0901%20LS%20Color%20background%20release%20FINAL.pdf

Interesting technology, but unknown price. And it does take quite a while to write the B&W, unknown how long the color would take.

  9. The way I read those, I'd say we're still talking monochrome, but not just black on a gold background. From that article I reckon we will see black on a red background, black on a blue background...

... hardly colour, is it ?

After looking at the PDF, yes, it looks like just different colored backgrounds, not fully colored images. I imagine full color would be possible, but it would have to be like three layers deep and the cost would likely be prohibitive. It would be nice, though.

    Yes, they're simply colored backgrounds.

But don't knock it until you try it! All my dvd master burns I do on Lightscribe and everyone who sees them is very impressed. Lightscribe burned text and graphics should outlast inkjet by a wide margin (for now). Great for archiving. Next year, maybe some other new technology...

Best Buy just started carrying the new LG Super-Multi Lightscribe enabled drive. Nice!!!!

Lightscribe to me is about as impressive as an Etch-a-sketch. The "ooo-aah" factor wears off in about 10 seconds.

Hey, but wouldn't it be fun if you could erase a disc just by shaking it a few times ?
