  1. Hi everyone,

Still looking for good quality white inkjet printable DVD-R that is NOT hub-printable... I've pretty much given up on finding the TY variety now (have the silver, but want the white); but I'd like some pointers if anyone can tell me where I can still find such type of media.

I am using the Plextor 12X & 16X burners -- they're pretty finicky about the type of media they like, but I'm willing to experiment. I already know about TDK and Verbatim -- the hub area is still too small -- I am basically looking for the old-school style with the big hub area.

Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Where are you? At SVP (UK & mainland Europe) they have a several non-hub printable disks to choose from. All with what I could concider good media codes if not always from the "best" brand (I've never had any quality issues though). A few examples include...

    {DV 3323} Panasonic Printable (8x) DVD-R in Spindle Tubs of 10 (TYG02)
    {DV 3218} Infiniti Inkjet Printable (16x) DVD-R in Spindle Tubs of 25 (MCC03RG20)
    {DV 3274} Ridisc Xtreme White Printable (16x) DVD-R in Packs of 25 (RITEKF1)

If you are elsewhere in the world I would imagine that similar disks are available.

  3. I'm in the US. The Panasonic and Infiniti probably would work great -- but I've never seen them for sale on US sites before...

Mainly quality recording media that has the printing surface area that I am looking for -- I understand that some printing surfaces are better than others -- but so long as the print dimensions fit my criterias, I am not going to be too picky about the print quality.

Rima doesn't have TY non-hub white inkjet printables anymore. Most of the Maxell IJP printable discs sold at Wal-Mart are hub printable too; the original poster wants white non-hub inkjet printables.

  9. Does anyone know what these are? I'm wondering if they might be TDK since other BurnMaster media is TDK. In addition, the description makes reference to "MSi metal-stabilized cyanine dye recording layer" which I had always thought was lingo associated with TDK media.

Fujifilm makes white and silver non-hub and hub printable 8x -R media. But I'm not sure if their media is considered to be of very high quality. Part numbers are:
    25302482 50PK DVD-R 4.7GB 8X WHT-INKJET PRINT SPINDLE
    25302483 50PK DVD-R 4.7GB 8X SLVR-INKJET PRINT SPINDLE
    25302487 50PK DVD-R 4.7GB 8X WHT-INKJET HUB PRINT SPINDLE
    25302488 50PK DVD-R 4.7GB 8X SLVR-INKJET HUB PRINT SPINDLE

I've never used any of this media so I can't speak on the size of the printable area.

Can anyone share opinions on why they choose white instead of silver inkjet printables (or silver instead of white)?

  11. I choose white because it has a better contrast to the label text I print on my discs. Also, if I print a full color picture on it, any white parts would actually look white and not silver (since printers don't print white).

If I come across any silver printable TY media that is a lot cheaper than white, I would probably pick some up instead.

As non-linear said, printers can't print white so I tend to stick to the white rather than silver disks.

That said I have printed a couple of silver disks that came in tester-packs. For images that have little or no white spaces they do look pretty good, with almost a holographic feel to them. Unfortunately though the middle part of the disk (where no data is held) is a lot lighter than the rest of the disk. (Obviously only a problem for hub printable disks).

Apart from "because people buy them" Why do they have silver printables?

I prefer the white because I label my DVDs with a black UltraThin Sharpie, and black on white "looks better" and is easier to read than black on silver IMHO.

They can look good, possiblty better than a white background under certain conditions. As a I said, I don't like that the middle bit of the disk prints a lighter colour but its not that obvious. The image also needs to be "colour rich" (sorry don't know the correct lingo). If there is too much pure white it can look a little dull.

I know I'm just pointing out the negative so I'll try to re-phrase....on non-hub printable disks, printing an image with little or no white space these disks look as good or better than white pritable disks (IMO)
