I am looking for a dvd player that can play PAL and NTSC dvds on an NTSC tv. I am a bit confused by all the region-free talk. I was told i need a dvd player with a built-in converter to do this. Is this true?

Which players will play both signals on an NTSC tv without having to buy additional converters and where can I buy them? Please help. Thanks.

  3. Depending on your needs and budget you might also wanna check out the OPPO DVD player, these are sweet:

It's around $200 so it's not the cheapest, but it's a quality deck with really excellent picture, and it'll play PAL discs on an NTSC TV right out of the box!

To directly answer your first question, region codes are simply blocks that stop any playback unless the player region matches the DVD media region. A region-free player will ignor the media region code.

Some NTSC DVD players may play PAL from PAL DVD media but normally you would need a PAL capable TV to view it.

Some "multisystem" DVD players will internally convert a PAL playback to a form that will work with most NTSC TV sets. The conversion methods use shortcuts and tricks so should not be considered true format transcodes.
