I have two usb hardware encoding capture devices and have used both at the same time with no problems.

ADS InstantDvd 2 and Compro VideoMate Live
I did NOT try having both running in an open windwo, rather I scheduled a capture with the Compro unit, minimized the window then moved on to capture with the IDVD-2 (which at the time could not be scheduled)

I do not have a high end sys. Low end Compaq with onboard video using shared memory.

It could be that both devices are hardware encoders or that I minimized the first window before starting the second capture

I believe XP can only have one WDM tuner operational at a time. It allows you to select one.

It is possible to use third party software or different technologies to capture multiple channels at the same time but understand you can easily swamp your CPU or HDD system unless the tuner-capture device hardware encodes the capture to a lower bitrate stream.

For instance, at the extreme Beyond TV 3 will run multiple PVR-250 MPeg2 encoding tuners. http://www.snapstream.com/Community/Articles/medusa/default.asp

At the other extreme, your system may choke on just two uncompressed 352x480 streams from cheap tuners.

I've had the following going all at one time on a P4 machine just playing around. This is the differenent technology approach.

    1. ATI AIW (WDM) recording MPeg2 (partially hardware supported) 480i
    2. Cablebox S-Video to Canopus ADVC-100 (hardware DV transcoder) recording DV video.
    3. Optibase USB capture device connected to a VCR tuner recording uncompressed 320x240.

  4. I have dual PVR-500's and a PVR-250 all going at the same time.
The only bottleneck is in hard drive speed. I need to use two different capture drives when recording with all 5 tuners.
