  1. I have a Lite-On 5101, and so far, am quite pleased with it. My question is regarding the chapters (automatically set at 5 minute intervals).

When I use the timer record feature, and playback the DVD, Is there a way to set the chapter to play at the end of the commercials (when I press the "next" button on the remote), instead of fast-forwarding throught the commercials?

Perhaps this can be done in the Disk Edit section? Or is this not changeable once the timer is finished burning?

    Any advice would be great!

See page 29-30 of the instruction manual. It shows you how to edit/add and delete chapters from the disk after it's recorded.

  4. Yeah, its in the manual, but the basic idea is to add a chapter mark at the beginning and end of the commmercial, then either "Hide" the chapter(s) containing the commercials or delete it - the menu says "Delete Mark", but it really deletes the chapter. BTW, you cannot delete the first chapter, but you CAN hide it.

I just use my 5101 to record and transfer it to the computer to edit. But when I have time later I'll try recording something and then adding and deleting chapters to see if you're correct.

However, if it really deletes the chapter when you select "Delete chapter marks", what does it do when you select "Add chapter marks"? Does it then record another chapter?

Okay. I just recorded 20 minutes of video with chapters points at each 5 minutes. When it was done, I went to Edit and deleted the chapter marks at 5, 10 and 15 minutes. Then I followed the directs in the manual and added a chapter at the end of a commercial. When I played the video- the chapter *marks* were gone except for one I added at the end of the commercial. The *chapters* were not gone as you claimed- there was still a full 20 minutes of video.

Based on your first post, that's exactly what you said you wanted to do. Delete extra chapters and add a chapter at the end of each commercial so you could skip to the end of the commecial.

Your last post says that now you want to also add a chapter at the beginning of the commercial. I have no idea why you'd want to do that unless you just like to skip the show and go right to the commercial. But disregarding that you obviously claimed that the it "really deletes the chapter" without every trying it. Therefore I'm done testing for you. Read the manual- it's correct.

  7. Mine actually DOES delete the chapter if you have clicked "enter" on a particular chapter while editing, then choosing "delete mark", but mine my be faulty. The reason to ad a chapter mark at the beginning & end of commercials is to hide or delete everything in between, ie the commercial, leaving you a fully running movie with no pesky commercials.

BTW, I really like the machine other than the fact it gains time & has to be adjusted whenever I am doing a timer recording. What can you expect for $150??

So if you have 15 minutes recorded with a chapter point at every minute, and you delete all the chapters except the first one, you only have one minute of the video left?

  9. Yes, thats correct, but why would you want to do that?

To edit out a commercial, place a chapter mark at the beginning of the commercial and another chapter mark at the end, creating one chapter that ONLY consits of that commercial, then only delete that "commercial chapter" you created, leaving you an uninterupted movie.

You will have to use the FF, RW & pause buttons to hit the beginning & end of the commercial just right.

I meant "chapter marks- if you delete all the chapter *marks* you only have 1 minute of video left?. If you delete the chapter marks then you should still have 20 minutes of video with only 1 chapter mark at the start of the video..

As I mentioned, even with the extra 5-8 minutes it takes to transfer the vobs to my hard drive, I still find it much easier and faster to edit (ie- cut out commercials, etc) on the computer than to use the cumbersome editing capabilites on most DVD recorders.

  11. 1. Thanks for pointing me to check on the "delete mark". I DID discover that it really does only delete the chapter mark instead of what I thought was deleting the entire chapter. I will have to be careful of that. So use the hide option for the marked commercial to "go away".

    2. I am using +RWs to record on the 5101. Yes, it took me about 1/2 hour to edit out the commercials on a 2 hour movie using the recorder itself. You must have some really good software on your computer for editing VOBs. Mine isnt & it is faster for me to do my editing on the recorder. I then use NERO to burn a disk copy onto a +R or -R on my PC for my permanent copy.

  12. Ok, it's been a while since I checked the answers to my question, but I can see Lots of you have tried this, but have any of you tried this , and checked if commercials are skipped using another DVD Player (not recorder)? Did the commercial skip or not? I will check on your answers more regularily from now on. Sorry about that!

I never checked back to this thread and saw the last post in January, but if anyone is still interested:

I returned the liton after about 4 weeks and finally bought a Pioneer which I've been using since then.

After recording I take the disk to my computer- it takes about 7 minutes (if the disk is full) to extract the mpeg using TMPGEnc DVD Author or TMPGEnc Mpeg Editor. Then it takes about 5 minutes to edit out the commercials for a 2 hour show (which is then down to about 1:24). 3-4 minutes for it to make the new mpeg, 10 minutes to create the DVD files with TDA (and then 7-8 minutes to burn a final disk).

That totals about 25 minutes (vs the 1/2 hour quoted), but for a total of 20 of those minutes I can walk away and do other things while the PC is working.

There are two other big advantages

1- the edited/cut commercials are no longer taking up space on the disk- so I can record at a higher bitrate, spreading the 2 hour movie over 2 disk and the final 1:25 minutes is better quality. Of course this is much easier to do if the recorder has a HD so you can still use the timer and record at higher settings without changing disks in the middle. It also works better with Pioneer than it does with most other recorders since I have 32 settings available rather than 3-4.

2- It's much, much faster to find the exact frame where I want to edit using an Mpeg editor than it would be using the recorder.
