Let's say I know very little about converting video files and such (which by the way is a huge understatement). I will simply state what I am trying to accomplish.

I would like to take a DVD (which I have permission to do this) view it on my Computer, take certain portions of the DVD (video and audio), save those portions in the computer or on a CD, and be able to use the files in power point presentations.

Now I know this can be done because I have seen many presentations that have taken video clips from movies, and very professionally put into power point.

Remember, I am not real experienced with computers, so if you have advise, please state it in a very basic way.

I really would appreciate any help anyone could give me. I am willing to buy whatever software required to make this happen.

    Thank you,
    Dan

Hi, I'm a newbie like you.

I can't answer all your questions but in the week I've been monkeying around with video, I'd say that Windows Movie Maker is a good start.

It's so easy to use and makes a great presentation. The more experienced folks on this site will recommend better programs and they're probably right but WMM is a great place to get your feet wet.

I just got a new system where it was already loaded on but I've been told it's free at the MS website.

If your ripping from a DVD that you say you have permission to, then DVDDecrypter is a great little program.

Since I'm a newbie, I haven't had a chance to pick up a DVD burning engine like Nero, but that seems to be what most folks use. You can download it easy enough (I like the touch and feel method of buying it in a store).

One more thing that is so important is reliable media. It seems that the better ones last longer and burn better. There is a list of recomended ones on this site.

Stick with this site, ask questions, don't be shy because their are lots of experienced people on this site that WILL help you.

    Good luck!

One problem - Windows Movie Maker has known issues with MPEG-2 (DVD). I've found you need to convert to something else first (like DV), which becomes quite cumbersome.

How to convert DVDs back to MPG files or demultiplex DVDs for reauthor or reedit might assist.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Personally I would recommend DVDDecrypter to copy the DVD to your hard drive, use file mode and in the settings select "file splitting - none".

I would then use Womble Mpeg Video Wizard, import in your big VOB file, select which portion of the video you want and output your clip.

MVW will output an mpeg which should be compatible with Powerpoint.

DVDDecrypter is free and MVW has a 30 day trial. Good luck.
