  1. Is there a way to somehow have both my VHS and DVD recorders hooked up so that I can tape a tv program using one or the other? Can an A/B switch possibly be used here?

An A/B switch could be used, but you'd have to walk over and move the switch every time you wanted to switch. Unless you already have a lot of TVs hooked up to your cable (I assume you're wanting to record TV from cable) you could use a splitter- cost $2-$3.

You could also run video and audio outs from the VCR to video/audio inputs on the DVD (or run the cable into the VCR, then out of the VCR into the DVD recorder, but the video/audio would probably be better). The disadvantage to those options is that you'd have to leave the DVD set to record from the VCR and couldn't watch a video tape while recording to DVD.

I'd just use a splitter (actually that is what I do).

Or you can buy a VHS/DVD recorder. On mine, I can record one channel to vhs, another channel to dvd, and watch a 3rd channel. All without switches...
