Is it possible to extract only music from an avi with ac-3 sound, for instance a movie?

Sure. Load your avi into VirutalDubMod. Go to Stream - stream list, and then Demux. Give it the path and the name you want and you're done.

If you mean, is it possible to lift just the music portion of the soudntrack from a movie, discarding all the dialogue, ambient noise etc, the answer is no. Some disks do have an isolated music score, but if they don't there is little you can do about it.

under very strict conditions that are rarely met. If you have a music clip that has the vocal recorded evenly down the centre, and the music spread around the two channels, you might be able to get the vocals out with analogX's Vocal Remover. But this will remove everything that is the same in both channels, and leave anything that isn't. This may mean you also lose percussion but keep backing vocals, for instance.

With movie sound tracks it is very rare that ambient noise and anything but the centre channel vocals will be evenly mixed, even on a 2 channel audio track, so the chances of removing it convincingly are very, very low.

Well I think I was succesful. Here's how I did it.

    1. Demuxed ac-3 from avi using virtualdubmod.
    2. Converted ac-3 to wav with ac-3 tool.
    3. Installed AnalogX's vocal remover plugin to sony's soundforge program.
    4. Ran the vocal remover plugin on the extracted wav.
    5. Succes!!

It removed the main voices from the wav beautifully, only thing remains is background and music, which is exactly what I wanted...

You got lucky. I have used it a number of times. On a few occassions things have worked out, but on most the results are either full of ghosts or too weedy and thin. It really depends on the original mix.
