Find out if it burns CDs. If not, it could be your laser diode is gone. They don't last forever. It could be dust or dirt on the lense. Use compressed air and blow it out. I've never found that the cleaning discs work. You might want to get a new burner. I haven't used the 4040B since getting the 4163B...

I tried uninstalling the burner and cleaned it with compressed air. I've always been able to burn cdr's. After the cleaning I was able to burn to dvd+rw, but it failed again when burning to a dvd+r. Any other ideas?

try updating your nero software and using different media.
other than that, i had exactly the same problem with my dvd writer a few weeks back, i could burn anything except dvdr, so i returned it and they fixed the lens assembly. Possibly, thats what is wrong with your one, but who knows. Some people are only alive because it may be illegal to kill them
