I think the Hyper Transport will do you more good than the additional 512Mb of RAM. You can always add RAM.

    What CPU speed?

Hmm..now that I look at them they are both 3.0Ghz and both have Hyper-Threading technology

Here are the the 2 computers specs.

    Computer 1 Pavilion a1030n
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 530J, 3GHz, with Hyper-Threading Technology, 512MB RAM, 200GB Hard Drive, 16X DVD+/-RW and 16X DVD Drives, Windows XP Home Edition ($709)

    Computer 2 Pavilion a1040n
    Intel® Pentium 4 processor 630, 3GHz with HT Technology, 1GB RAM, 200GB hard drive, 16x max. speed DVD-ROM, LightScribe double-layer 16x DVD±R/RW drive with CD writer capabilities—16x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD±RW, 2.4x DVD+R DL, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, 40x CD-ROM, Windows XP Home ($950)

So for $240 more I get 512 more ram and a DL burner with lightscibe (don't need or want).

It would be cheaper to just by a the 1030n, a $50 Benq DL burner and 512 Ram ($68) from Crucial for a total of $120 cheaper than getting the intel 630?

    I don't even know what I'm thinking/talking about anymore......

I guess my question is which would you buy. Only being used for web/office progs and video editing.....

    Intel Pentium 4 Processor 530J
    3GHz, with Hyper-Threading Technology
    1GB RAM
    200GB Hard Drive

A couple weeks ago the above computer was selling for $650 after MIR. You may want to check with them each week to see if I'll be on sale again.

look at this way...how much do you make per hour at your current job? now factor in it only takes a few hours to learn how to. now if in that few hours you learn how to...in the mean while saving yourself a few hundred $$$...

    you do the math :P

    The CPU in the Pavilion a1030n is a P4 530J with 1MB L2 cache.
The CPU in the Pavilion a1040n is a P4 630 with 2MB L2 cache. I think it also supports 64 bits.

The bigger cache in the second option should improve a bit overall performance but will not improve on video capture or rendering time.

Get the Pavilion a1030n with a P4 530J and upgrade the memory and burner yourself.

I have had nothing but problems with Dells. Several of my friends have them, because they were "Good Deals", but have a had more troubles then I care to mention. I have had to work on all of them, more than once, cause I'm the only one who has some knowledge about computers. The parts they use are cheap (power supplies burn out or died with in 1 month and 7 months on another.)

Thanks for all the replies, but I am all set from the post, so no need to reply anymore. Thanks again
