If you are wanting easy, I would not use gentoo. You have to recompile gentoo. Use something like Fedora Core 4 or SuSe.

For "easy" Linux, I would recommend Xandros, MEPIS or K/Ubuntu.

Fedora Core 4.
It will walk you through the process of dual booting. I had never touched Linux before I set up the dual boot configuration of Fedora and Windows XP. Unless all of your hardware was released within the past month, Fedora probably has a driver for it. It will detect your Windows XP drive/partition without issue. I would recommend making sure XP is instllaed on it's own drive first, then boot to the Fedora CD. -
yeah get fedora core or debian wud do a gr8 job for u
@voelk FC4 actually detects most hardware after 2001 so need for drivers and i think that linux actually needs no drivers need ur comments on this -
What I menat was that it has drivers, at least a generic one, for most devices. If you have the latest SLI card from nVidia, or the latest mainboard from Asus, you're probably going to have to hunt around for a driver. If you have a standard hardware setup, you should be all right. I had a Logitech USB camera, I can't remember the model since I'm not at work, but it picked it up and configured it during setup. I think it did name it odd (compared to Windows), something like Multimedia Presentation Device or something like that.

yup that's the prob with Linux it names some things quite oddly and yeah i agree with u it wud need drivers for graphic cards and cams.btw can ne Linux distro write into NTFS partition cause many can only read NTFS partitions
