  1. hi, im trying to back up a dvd which is obviously damaged since windows xp will not even let me copy it to the HD.

is there a program or way of force ripping.copying this
i understand that there will be an error on the backed up cd, but i dont care, as long as i can get at least back it up i can live with the occasional freeze or skip during movie playback

  2. Pioneer dvd burners can read many defective disks that other burners can't, so try it on a Pioneer if you can. Otherwise, no.

ISOBuster does fairly well at recovering damaged DVD data. DVDDecrypter sometimes works, but you may have to increase the error retries or set it to ignore read errors.

I would also inspect the DVD visually. If it has scratches, try polishing them out. Even coating with car wax and polishing sometimes works.

Try various software, DVD Decrypter set with ignore read errors. ISOBuster has helped me in the past rip dvds that were scratched which dvd decrypter couldn't.

Depends on how badly the damage is.

  5. its not a pioneer its a lg 4163b.

im currently running decrypter and its been about 4 hours and its done about %1 of current progress (not total progress)

tere are 449 read errors reported (and about 9300 retries and countimg)

after a couple of read errors it did give me the option of turning off the error reporting and i did

the read rate is at 0/kb per second
although it does manage to to a couple of kb every minute or so
(so far it has done about 300 kb in the last 3-4 hours

i dont know if i should just cancel it, or leave it hoping that maybe it will pass the damaged area and get back to normal speed

and i did check the dvd manually before putting it in - there was not a single scratch on the thing...ni finger prints, nothing.

Sounds like it's really messed up. I would run it overnight if you really want to give it a good try. But I suspect if your errors continue at that rate, you won't have much to show for it.

Use dvd fab decryter. It will ignore the unreadable sectors and still create a readable vob. I just used it a minute ago on a disk that decrypter would not read. You might first try cleaning it or using toothpaste.

No I am not joking; there is a mild abrasive in toothpatse that works well cleaning scratches. Search the forums for it.

  12. well after giving up on decrypter and double checking the surface for scratches (couldnt see a single one) i decided to try dvd fab.....to no avail.
at first, when it came to about 60%, it just stopped moving.
the dvd drive light still kept blinking (just like when decrypter froze) but nothing happened.
when i tried again - it wouldnt even do that - just said "drive read fail"

isobuster proved to be even more useless...
it couldnt read ANY files .
it just kept showing me errors and saying it couldnt read the sectors (and i tried ALL the options on the left)

so thanx guys for helping but i think im ready to turn in - ive already spent all day at this and intend not to spend anymore time.
