SONY DVD RW DW-U21A won't burn 16x DVD-R media

I have a G5 with a SONY DVD RW DW-U21A, running OS10.3.9. I recently purchased some Verbatim 16x DVD-R media. However the drive will refuse to burn these disks. I have tried burning at slower speeds but what ever speed I choose, I get an error 'Couldn't complete the last command because of a Mac OS error. Result Code= -50'.

I also have a G4 with a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-104, this drive has no problem burning the verbatim 16x media. I am amazed that the newer G5 with the newer DVD-RW will not burn these discs.

Is there an official firmware updater so this drive supports this media? or any other solution. The drive is still under warranty so I don't want to update the firmware with a 3rd party updater.

The U21A is rated only for 8x -R. 16x is only for +R...

And no, there is no known official updater for this drive, unfortunately.
