I'm pretty sure that Windows Movie Maker can't demux WMV. Either that or I haven't worked out how to yet
    If in doubt, Google it.

I just tried something out and it worked.

Import your .WMV into WMM and drag it down to the timeline. Right-click on the audio track and select copy, then paste it onto the Audio/Music track. Delete the original video (along with its original audio) and you're left with just an Audio/Music track on the timeline. Choose Save to my computer and by default this audio-only file will be saved in .WMA format.

    Voilą, demuxed!

    Demuxed, or re-encoded ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

Yeah, I think you're right, it re-encodes it, but if you choose a production format like "Best Quality Audio," or any format which exceeds your original audio's properties, it actually upsamples the bitrate so your quality loss will be minimal.

The Windows Media Stream Editor, one of the utilities included with Microsoft's Windows Media Encoder, can demux the audio from a Windows Media Video file.
