I'm not sure what your problem is. I have that drive, though I use it only for burning. I just tried it for reading my Star Wars Phantom Menace disc with DVDShrink, and no problems. Took about 3 minutes to read.

You may have a bad drive. If you are having problems ripping DVDs with Shrink try DVDFab Decrypter or the older DVDDecrypter. That is if you are backing up your discs. I have no problems playing any of my DVDs with that drive.

The only number that looks similar to yours is 'KYS2'. It's whatever firmware it came with. Got the drive about 2 months ago.

No matter what the firmware, it should still read all DVDs. Firmware is mostly for burning, and as the media I'm using is 4X (Prodisc SO3), and works fine for me, I haven't any reason to change the firmware for other speeds or brands.

I use a Sony DDU1615 DVD-ROM for reading DVD's. This is all in my mulitimedia computer, not my profiled one.

You might try crossflashing your drive to liteon sohw-1693, using the Omnipatcher software. The latest firmware is KSOA, and flashing should be no problem, since the hardware part of the drives is the same. You can even keep the SONY name.

You can get all the info you need on http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44
Just don't forget that flashing an unofficial firmware voids your drive's warranty
