  1. I just bought 100 4x TY's from supermediastore and they are only burning at 1x. I have bought from them before and they all worked fine! It is not my burner because when I put a Ritek in it burns at 4x. Do you think this is a problem with the discs or something I am overlooking? Anyone else have this problem with media from supermediastore or TY's?

In other words, fill our your computer specs in the user CP [click Profile].. Although unlikely, it could be that you have a lousy burner whose maker didn't include proper support for 4x TY in the firmware.

If you don't know your specs (ie: moterhboard maker/cpu speed/memory/OS/gfx/etc/etc), try Lavalys Everest Home, or maybe SiSoft SANDRA...For the firmware, you could try checking device manager>dvd/cd drives>(your dvd burner)>DEVICE INSTANCE ID or FIRMWARE REVISION (in the dropdown box..This is mine..
firmwareIDE\CDROMPIONEER_DVD-RW__DVR-109_________________1.50 << Obv a PIO DVR109, runs the 1.50 FW..Barring that, try Nero Info Tool, it will give the FW info, and should be included in the package when you installed it (if you have it )...Or just google it - I believe it's a freeware tool.

Don't know about bad disc, but I have a batch of 100 4x TY from Shop4Tech, and I am not impressed. While all the discs work, there were visible defects which I have not seen on other brands. At least 1 has crator like dimples on the data side, several have bubbles on the top side, and at least 1 is "off center." Again, they have all worked in a standalone, but some takes several tries to get going.

I had the same problem until I updated the firmware in my writer. Now it works fine.

  8. I am not in front of my computer so I will provide the specs this evening. However, I don't see why it would be my firmware or any needed update because I have already burned 200 4x Shiny TY's from SupermeiaStore (different batches) without any problem. I am assuming that it is a bad batch since I have had no prior problem burning these discs.

  9. Try using DVDInfoPro freeware to see what media code is on these TY's.

    Hello Lord,

How can one tell between fake and genuine TY, or other brands?

I'm not Lord, but anyway :P

If you look at the the serial # on the inside ring what would you see? In the genuine TY 4x -R serials should start with GD, 8x with GG, and 16x with GH.

He bought the 100 pack from Supermediastore, so it's highly unlikely they aren't legitimate TY discs. Even if the discs are defective, as soon as the drive reads the disc's MID it should offer a 4x write option; any reduction in speed should occur only after the burning process is initiated.

  14. I have been buying TY dvd-r, X4 in 100 packs from Supermediastore. Every batch until the last was TYG01 but the last batch was TYG02 even though the factory wrapping had the same label as all previous batches. I believe it came from the factory misslabeled. It happens.

  15. alot of online media stores have been selling these budget packs of TY discs. Maybe TY was trying to make a few bux offloading some of their inferior media?

I bought a 100 pack of the 4x discs from blankmedia.ca a while back, and they all burned at 4x fine in my old lg4040b burner. They did have the media code of tyg01 though.

you say ours have tyg02 which would indicate the burner should actually be trying to burn those things at 8x speed, since tyg02 is an 8x dvd-r. They probably sold them as 4x because they weren't quite up to snuff for 8x burning, but were more then fine for 4x burning. Kind of like how you can overlock your cpu, they just sell them at a safe speed.

as for burning at 1x, maybe try updating your drives firmware? It should still at least attempt to burn them faster, even if the disc contains errors. So i'd guess you have an older drive, haven't updated the firmware and the drive just defaults to 1x. The fact that your burner can actually burn at 1x indicates to me that its an older burner. (most newer burners can't burn that slow). back in the days of my my old lg burner, if the media code wasn't recognized it defaulted to 2x on any media.

other then that make sure you are running in DMA mode.

what kidna burner is it anyways?

  16. Most of my TY disks are burned on a dvd recorder which burns at X1. I discovered the TYG02 disks while experimenting with TMPGEnc DVD Author on the computer. Author reported it was burning the disk at X8 just as you mentioned. After the burn was complete, the disk was checked with DVDInfoPro which reported it was a TYG02. I checked the stack of 100 and found they all had that code. I also have a stack with exactly the same paper label which is all TYG01. All the X8 burns went well with no problems.
