  1. I have had a dvd made of old family video. I am in Canada, and assume it is region 1 ntsc. How do i tell?? is there a proggy for this??

I need to send a couple copies of it to the UK, and need to be sure they will be able to play it.

    Thanks for help....

  2. Unless the author of your home made DVD specifically set a region (which is not probable), the region is actually 0. Region 0 DVDs can be played in any DVD player regardless of geographical location. Even though your DVD is NTSC and the UK primarily uses the PAL television standard, they will most likely still be able to view your disc. Dual television standard TVs and DVD players are more previlent in the Europe than in the US.

Or just ask them if their TV and DVD player can play NTSC discs.

    You're in region 1.

However your problem will be they use PAL in the uk. You have to convert it to pal. Unless your friends have a mutliformat player.

THOUGH they could play it on a pc with no problems. But to watch it on a regular settop player it will need to be converted to pal

Check the guides on how to do this.

I am in the USA and I sell intructrional videos in the USA and through a company in the UK. So far everyone has been able to play my NTSC region 0 dvds in their players. Havent heard of any problems from my distributor.

jawnlaw, you'll be fine sending copies to the UK in eieher NTSC or PAL format. Most dvd players/tv in the UK are capable of playing both NTSC and PAL so it shouldn't be a problem.

As I live in the UK, ive never come across any problems playing NTSC dvds.

It's been said before but I'll say it again, ALL European DVD players will play NTSC discs. Europe is Region 2 and uses PAL, Japan is Region 2 and uses NTSC, therefore EVERY Region 2 DVD player MUST be able to play both formats.
