Is there a huge difference from the $70 TMPGEnc DVD Author and the $100 TSUNAMI MPEG DVD Author PRO?

What I want to do is edit vobs (cut out commercials from a episodic dvd) without having to convert the vobs to and format....

    You may have seen this:https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=276778

If you want to wait, the Pro version probably has a few more niceties for a few more dollars, but I'm happy with the regular version.

So does TMPGEnc DVD Author work directly with VOB files or do I need to convert to another format to edit them with this program?

Yes. You click 'Source Setup>Add DVD video' and go to your DVD folder. You edit in 'Chapter cut edit'. It's easy to use. The trial version is good for 30 days, so you can try it for free.

As far as I can tell you can cut the start or finish of a vob file when importing into TMPGEnc DVD Author but not a bit out of the middle. For that I think you have to import the same vob twice cutting the end from one and the start from the other. It's then pretty easy to arrange for the two files to play in quick succession.

You can cut on any 'I' frame anywhere in the video using 'Chapter cut edit'. Set start frame at the beginning of the commercial and set end frame and the end, then cut. Works for me, anyway.

    I'm using Version 1.6.26.73.

last question. Is the 30 day free trial a full working version?

  9. Full Working Version except, The Pro Trial leaves a big Watermark on the Menu, More accurate cutting of files. Can transcode (Shrink) a oversize DVD to fit a blank DVD. More control of menus. AC3 not a separate plug-in. Dual Layer authoring like 1.6 vs 1.5 single layer only.

I'll most likely take advantage if the $60 upgrade offer it that tells you anything.

    Cheers

Pro is a new phenomenon. There was no Pro version of 1.5/1.6
(And some would argue that there still is no Pro version, despite the name...)

  12. I think you will find cutting out commercials to be very frustrating with Tmpgenc DVD Author. To get to the beginning and end of a cut you have to fast forward and it is very choppy and imprecise. (If you only have to to a few edits it is fine)

In contrast, with VideoReDo you can scroll as quickly as you want with no hesitation. It is a snap to edit out commercials or anything else. VideoReDo can use the vob and will output as mpg without reencoding.

You would then re-author with Tmpgenc DVD Author or any program you want.

Redo sounded good, but I don't want to output as mpeg. I already have the dvd comlpiant Vobs, so why would I want a proram that doesn't output to them......

  14. A vob is basically a Mpg2 file.
taking A mpeg and making VOB/BUP files to burn only takes seconds. this is the best way.

Redo is the way to go.Unless you want somthing with more steps..

So going from a vob and outputing to mpeg with redo, won't affect quality? Also, how would I then go back from mpeg to vob, to then burn?

After you've got the MPEG files, you still have to re-author to create your're VOB files for burning. To me, it's a lot easier to stay within 1 app for both your editing and authoring, which is why I've always liked TDA. I've tried the new PRO version and must say that I really like it. Will definitely upgrade when it becomes available. For editing, you can quickly scroll like the previous version, but it is apparently now "frame-accurate" cuts with minimal recoding. Actually, for TV shows, I found the old half-second, I-frame only edits to be perfectly adequate. Only rarely would there be a problem. In any case, suggest that you download these apps for a trial and see what works best for you. Good luck.

  17. wwag,
Do you really find it easy to scroll in TDA? For me it is very choppy. Have you tried VideoReDo and compared the two?

I'm trying to figure out if we have the same experience and describe it differently or if TDA behaves differently on your computer.\

As far as VOB vs Mpg there is no re-encoding involved in taking a DVD compliant mpg and creating the vobs and other files needed for a DVD. The VOB is just a package that contains the mpg and some other information. (that's my understanding anyway)

will tsunami mpeg dvd author pro allow you to use mpeg2 files with ac3 audio on the main menu?

i know with TDA it requires LPCM or MP2 audio.

Video ReDo DOES output back to VOBs as well as Mpeg. It's the best thing since sliced bread. Why don't you download the trial demo, which has no restrictions (except time) and try it for yourself instead of asking the obvious questions and getting dumb answers ???

    presto

No, I haven't tried VideoReDo. From the reviews in the Tools section, it looks quite good. I'll agree--scrolling in TDA is a PIA. The new PRO version seems a lot quicker and smoother IMO.

Even though there's no re-encoding from MPEG to VOB, there is still the time to simply "copy" the file to another location. Bottom line is that you still have to "author" your files and create menus. IMHO, it's simply a lot quicker to do it in the same app. I have also used Tmpgenc's MPEG Editor which is frame accurate as well. Again, it renders only the necesary frames and creates an MPEG file. However, you still have to do the authoring in another app and since it takes longer, I no longer use it.

Finally, I agree with zenzen1's suggestion--simply download them and try them for yourself and select what works best for you.

One question for VideoReDo users--how does the automatic commerical detection feature work? Preumably, it looks for "solid black" frames?? If it works, that would be useful. For long captures, simply finding the commerical is a PIA.

  21. VideoReDo allows me to import the information that Beyond TV generates about the location of commercials. On some shows Beyond TV finds the commercials perfectly and on some it does not.

Since I do it that way I haven't really used VideoReDo's commercial finding ability yet. When I did test it it seemed to work as well as the one I currently use. It also allows you to change the search parameters which my current program does not allow.

  22. When I tried the commercial finder in ReDo, It worked as I expected. approx 90+% accurate. It saved some time when cutting since even when it didn't hit the start/end it did put me in the commercial and then I could use the scroll to fine tune.

    Roger

Edit: I could have improved its performance if I had bothered to fine tune the settings.
