Why do you want to go to AVI then MPEG again? Why don't you just use TMPGEnc? It accepts MPEG's. Everytime you convert you are losing quality.

    why convert it to avi

just add the subtitles and re-encode

you can even so this in vdub (as it is a mpeg1)

  5. or

    1) use VCDGear to convert D:\MPEGAV\AVSEQ01.DAT
    into a 'true' MPEG

    2) install VOBSUB and configure it (look for some guides in the net; essentially: make the priority of DitecrtShow Media Player in TMPGenc to be the highest, via doing the times its needed: Option__Environmental Settings --> VFAPI plug-in and doing right-click___higher priority on the DirectShow Multimedia Reader plug-in) and put 'movie.str' in c:\subtitles directory). The TMPGenc's output should now have permenently encoded subtitles [check , doing in TMPGenc File__Preview and making the movie to play that VobSub works]

Just a run of TMPGenc and the result has optimal quality!

Optimal here meaning "as good as possible under the circumstances".
