  1. I made a kvcd from a pal tmpgenc template because the source movie was pal and when i tried to play it on my dvd player with the normal settings it has color but it has very noticible hiccups where the picture would freeze and so would the sound so ok i have an apex 1225 dvd player and i found that by pressing setup and selecting video i could choose the video output to be nstc, pal or auto i tried pal and auto but both gave me the same result an output with no color, the apex logo screen stayed on for atleast 10 seconds before getting to the movie and the tracking was off. But it works great on my computer.

Can anyone give me any ideas on how i can setup my dvd player or should i have tried to encode the movie to ntsc standards and not try to play a pal cd on my dvd player ever again?

You need to leave your video setting at NTSC, unless you have a multistandard TV. If you don't know if you have one or not, you DON'T have one, I guarantee it. Here is what the settings mean:
NTSC - send all video output to my TV in NTSC format, regardless of the source video format.
PAL - send all video output to my TV in PAL format, regardless of the source video format.
AUTO - send all video output to my TV in the exact same format as the orignal source because my TV can display both PAL and NTSC.

KVCD does some strange things with video bit rates and GOPs to extend recording time on the disc. It is not an officially supported format. I can't rule out that your Apex player is simply having problems with the GOPs on your disc. Your problem is not a NTSC/PAL issue as Apex players do a good job of converting. It sounds to me like Baldrick is right and you just need to consider making a VCD instead. I have a couple of older Apex players and although I don't use them now, they could play any PAL disc with no problems. Lots of things play fine on a PC that cause problems for DVD players. It's a very long explanation as to why, but in simple terms, DVD players don't have hard discs filled with codecs to search, so they use firmware to tell them how to play various discs. kvcd isn't an official video standard anywhere, so if it works, great, if not, well, there were no guarantees.
