I have quite a few movies on my computer and just don't have time to burn them all right now. I want to compress them with something so the files don't take up so much room on my hard drive. I thought (I guess thought wrong) that WinZip or WinRar would do that but the archives ended up being pretty much the same size as the original.
Any suggestions?

avi isn't a format it's a container. Are your files xvid, mpeg4, DV-AVI, or something else?

Just looking at a few of them I have XVID, MPEG4, and DVCodec. (At least that's what it says.) Most of them are MPEG4.

mpeg4 is already a compressed format so you will gain nothing trying to compress them futher. Same with XVID.
