I'm running the DVR 107D and latest version of Toast, and TDK, Fuji and SONY discs burn just fine at 8X, but Maxell and Memorex won't, they only burn at 4X. It's the same with either DVD-R or DVD+R. Is there a firmware update for this? The weird thing is, it used to work perfectly with all brands.
Any pointers will be much appreciated, if not, I'll just replace with 16X latest Pioneer, I've seen it in the 50 dollar range+ shipping, and the media's getting cheaper by the day.

The latest firmware for that Pioneer drive is 1.21. Many firmware updates deal with media compatibility. Updating the firmware on Pioneer drives has been discussed here. Toast recognises my recently purchased 8x Maxell media as 8x capable.
Search for DVDFlash in this forum. (flashing utility)
and the latest official firmware is here (just unzip it):
