sorry for being human,
it appears NOT to be a common mistake -
are you running two drives on your comp? I had the same prob with a NEC CD burner and then adding a dvd-rom drive to a Dell tower. In the end I replaced the CD drive with something else, and it solved the problem. It'd be interesting to hear if someone else solved this without replacement, so I could be pissed about how I didn't really need to spend the money.

Had same problem with Sony burner and Nero. It was my media. What discs are you using?

I indeeed have 2 drives 1 rom only and one cd/dvd writer. The funny thing is that with cd burning there are no problems. This media I have been using for quite some time now w/out any rpoblems.

Could possibly be your media and could possibly be your laser lens becoming dirty. Had this happen to me on a Pioneer drive and blew it out with canned air. Symptoms were the same as yours in that CD's burned fine but DVD's wouldn't.

my nec 3500 did that. cleaned with cd cleaner.. the type that has a little brush mounted on a DVD. works fine after.

Have you recently updated your firmware? I have hade bad firmware updates give me that problem.

Say you have media rated at 4X that gives you this error consistently. Try burning at 2X or 1X. If it burns at lower speeds fine, but at the rated speed, it consistently gives this error, then the diagnosis of crappy media is pretty much confirmed. -
i had the same problem, i just don't use cd's in the drive dvd only, it seems when i change types thats when this happens(strange i know) also i went in to admin of XP and disabled the cd drive burning element(not sure whats its called) but if you search on the issue you will find it, since 3 weeks ago i have not had one issue since(knock on wood)
