  1. Hi All,

I have Pentium 4 PC with 925x motherboard. I have installed the SONY DRU 720A DVD drive on the SATA interface using SATA to PATA converter cable that came with the Mother Board.

When I try to play the Legal DVDs' Bought from shops, I can only hear the sound but the screen is totally black.

I have winXP on my PC. But I have not upgraded to Service Pack 2. Can somebody help me. I suspect the Codec Drives. But I am not sure, which codec is necessary to view the Movie. Any help is appreciated. Also I am not able to play some of the Audio CDs. Not sure what causes the problem.

    Thanks in Advance.

You need a MPeg2 decoder to play a DVD. Did you install the software that came with the Sony? There's probably a MPeg2 player in there. A writer usually comes with a Nero authoring package as well.

Usually once the MPeg2 codec is installed, WMP also accesses it for DVD playback.

I essentially had the same problem.

I was rebuilding one of my PC's. The drives i put into it were a Plextor 504A and a generic reader. Neither would play anything (DVD -esque) that i tried.

Thank fully tho it gave me an error message relating to the lack of an Mpeg-2 decoder, so i installed the such and it worked perfectly.

Does sound like its nothing to do with the drive (a knackered drive v unlikely to pick audio stream but not the video stream) and does sound much more like PC problem.

Install either a specific decoder or the software package that came with the drive.

And hopefully you'll be able to get the popcorn out!

  4. HI,

I checked the codecs using dxman and found mpeg2 decoder, spliter, some table designer etc. It seems okay with respect to codec. I am not sure about the versions and the vendor name. I am going to post it tonight once I reach home.

I am also going to try and update my Inno3d graphic (pci express) card driver and see whether things work.

I was using windvd ver 7.0 to play the DVD. Am not sure whether I need different type of mpeg2 codec for this. Any I will post the result tonight.

    Thanks for your help.

Another question. anyone used dvdregion free software. Does it really work in unprotecting dvds.?

    regards

WinDVD and PowerDVD install their own mpeg2 codec. Try uninstalling and reinstalling WinDVD.

Also, try using the software to open the disc instead of the autoplay feature.
