I have tried VCD Easy, TMPGenc Plus 2.5 with no success.

I used TMPenc to convert the avi to mpeg2 then tried vcd easy to copy yhr mpeg2 to CD using svcd. It didnt burn anything to my blank CD-R at all.

said something about having to be a certain aspect ratio. If so then that leaves a huge problem since the source avi is 640 x 272

its totally bizzare. It says that it only supports rediculous ratios like 480x480 or 480x576???????

Since Video CD's are limited to such bizzare ratio is there a way to convert .avi to wmv?

  4. SVCD resolution is 480*480 (NTSC) and 480*576 (PAL). There's nothing bizzard about that. I've made SVCD using VCDEasy without any problems.

In your case, you don't have the correct resolution. You can convert to WMV but SVCD is much better if you are going to use the disc in a stand alone DVD player because there are a lot more players that support SVCD than WMV.

well every DVD standalone I have ever owned has supported WMV even the cheap $50 ones.

is there a way i can convert to 480x480 without losing original aspect rastio, like black bar on top& bottom to make up the extra area?

edit: Seems I was mistaken about the wmv I meant Mpeg 2, sorry

Download dvd2svcd to use in conjuction with tmpgenc plus. It can use avi as the input and will output a svcd file in cue/bin format ready to burn with nero or similar burning software.

Is there an way to makie a 640 x 272 avi source watchable in VCD/SVCD format?

I read somwhere that SVCD supports widescreen!!!
which is strange since it only supports those wacky aspect ratios that no-one uses.

It's not wacky - it's a standard. It will be displayed with the right aspect ratio (4:3 or 16:9) if you resize right. But even @ 16:9, you have to add some black borders top/bottom for a source resoution like you've got to display correctly.

Im sorry but anything with equal height and width or greater height than width is wacked.

    1600x1200, 1280x1024, 1024x768 or 800x600 is standard

anyway how am i supposed to make my source file display corectly using 480x480???

It's a bit complicated to calculate (I think FitCD has a nice resize calculator) so I generally do it on intuition. I'd start by resizing to something like 480 * 300, and add 90 px border top & bottom to get total height to 480, and set it to display @ 16:9. But that's just shooting from the hip.

For what? Not for anything meant to be displayed using a DVD player on a TV, at least. Common computer monitor resoultions, yes, but that's it.

What you have to realise with aspect ratios is this. PC monitors have square pixels, TV's do not. So although the resolution of the digtal movie may seem wierd, it will look correct when displayed on your TV, assuming it is converted correctly.

SVCD only supports a display aspect ratio of 4:3, so if you want widescreen it has to be achieved by adding black bars top and bottom to make it up to 4:3.

You can either do some simple maths to determine the aspect ratio of the source and how that related to SVCD, or read one of the many guides on here that tell you how to do it, or use a tool that does it for you such as FitCD, its up to yoiu.
