Hardware - analog capture card, or an analogue-to-digital device such as an ADVC-50, 55, 100 or 110. I've got an ADVC-100, but any analogue-capable capture card will do the job.

Software - capture software, encoding software, authoring software, burning software. You may find products will do the lot (Ulead, and a few others), but I prefer to use seperate "dedicated" programs for each step.
    If in doubt, Google it.

If the vhs tapes are "home brew" then you do not need to worry about overcoming MV or other encryption

Bypassing Mv & other stuff is needed when backing up most commericial tapes or other medium

Check out the ADS product line. http://www.adstech.com
I have the InstantDvd 2.0 which is excelent for what you want to do.
I have not keeped up with competing devices as to price/value but will say this device gives excellent results. Working on 800+ vhs collection purchased from rental store and have done over 400

  4. ok.....capture software? Any suggestions? Do I need to encode if these are just home movies on vhs? I know how to backup dvd movies. I use dvd decrypter to rip, cce to encode and decrypter to burn. So, what steps need to be taken. Again, I can't seem to find a guide for vhs to dvd on a pc. The hardware information is very helpful! thanks
