I have received a movie clip in wmv format and I have been trying to convert it to mov or avi using ffmpegx. I am not an expert on the latter, but the converted avi or mov files are really grainy with lots of pixelation problems and unfortunately bad quality.
I wonder if any members of the forum have any experiences and possible suggestions with wmv and ffmpegx ( or another commercial or freeware solution).

If you get Flip4Mac QuickTimePro can export WMV flies to any format that you have plugins for.

UNLESS it is WMV v.3, then your stuck only playing it with VLC.
Go here, and follow these steps by Major and Case:

as long as the video is not WMV3, it should work."Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

Stavrosh has evidently already had success using ffmpegX, so I don't know how that thread is going to help him.
Stavorsh, you're probably out of luck. Was the quality loss using ffmpegX significant? I mean how was the quality of the original wmv? Personally I wouldn't hold out too much hope of getting any kind of decent (i.e. worth burning to disc) video from a wmv-anythingelse conversion. -
First of all I would like to thank all three of you for your time and for your feedback. It is really frustrating that simple things should be so complicated.
The flip4Mac solution is good and the quality of the mov file is very close to the original, but it is very difficult to swallow the price of the plug-in ($ 99- 180).
The ffmpegX solution is rather more complicated, but after playing for 3-4 hours with various tools settings I have found that a converted avi file (352 x 256, high quality , second pass) is pretty close to the original. The problem I have found the last few hours is that Compressor (1.2.1) does not like the file, so I return to point zero. Other attempts to export to a mov file have failed, but I guess this is due to my lack of experience with ffmpegX.
If any of you has converted wmv with ffmpegX please drop me a line of the settings you have used .. in case these are Compressor friendly.

the middle steps listed by Domy and Major I have had success with, unless it has been WMV3 video.
the resulting .mov file plays nice with Compressor 1.21."Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

TerryJ thanks as always for the inside information !!! Now as it is predictable things don't work at first !! I tried partially the steps indicated in the link you have mentioned .. and I am getting errors.... I am sure that I am doing something wrong in the selection of ffmpegX variables.
The strange thing though is that although I have a wmv2 I cannot get a mov file output from ffmegX (following the simple steps suggested by major) , the encoding lasts 1 s and of course the file is not readable.
The compressr problems I mentioned the other day are related to the encoding of the mp3 track to aiff .. the video decodes ok , but the audio locks for ever... -
Video: Make sure you have the invert mapping box
checked on the AUDIO tab. Don't ask why, only
Major knows why its on that tab, but ffmpegx won't process
until this box is checked.
Audio: if the file can be played via VLC, in cases like this, I simply use Audio Hijack Pro ( or Wiretap) to re-record
the audio to AIFF."Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

TerryJ I can verify to you that even with the sound tab inverted the sound stream (mp3) blocks Compressor. The Video stream processes smoothly ..
It is really ingenious tp use a sound program ( hijack Pro) to get the sound ... excellent idea ... thanks
