new and having problem with avi video

hi all sorry if posted wrong place.
i have an avi file i want to convert to dvd so i can play on stand alone player my problem is this when i do convert using any of the programs i have the audio is out of sync the avi plays fine on my comp and is in ntsc but i need it in pal
..using virtual dub i found the audio vbr was wrong so i know i needed to change the frame rate from 23xxx to 25xxxfps i used besweet and have a ac3 file now but dont know how to check if its the correct size as i cant find anything to play it
i also converted the avi video file to mpeg and it went from 1hr26minutes to 1hr22minutes so that seems ok but how do i merge the two files so i have a dvd
i tried using the film machine but i end up with only just over 7 minutes of video and i cant work out whats wrong i have searched and seen a few solutions and tried what i can programs permitting so can someone please help as this has being doing my head in and i have been on it for a 5 days solid now

author to dvd with tmpgenc dvd author, add the mpg and then ac3. output to the hd too check that is sync.

you can play ac3 with media player if you install ac3filter.

ty baldrick i did as you said had to download trail of dvd author and it made a file only thing is instead of one vob file i have 7 different sections of the film plus two bup files and two vts files is this normal and what do i do with them all as far as i can tell its in perfect sync now

i put all the files into nero and burned it seemed ok until 33 minutes into the film it froze and then went back to main menu my dvd player will play anything vcd svcd mp3 never had a problem playing anything up till now
i am wondering if it because was so many files?
