My local Sam's club had a spindle of 75 Maxell DVD-R inkjet printable for $29.98. There is a sticker over the barcode with another bardcode on it and it also says "Made in Japan" on it. Seems like a good deal, but the new sticker makes me a little nervous. Has anyone else gotten them and tried them out?
Thanks

I've used the 25 pack of hub-printable Maxell 8x DVD-Rs from Wal-Mart; they are indeed made in Japan by Hitachi-Maxell and have a MID of MXLRG03. They work great on my Pioneer A09 drive.
-
The Walmart I have in town has a lot of Taiwanese made Maxells, none made in Japan. Thats why that sticker scares me a little. Are they really made in Japan or someones idea to cover them up?
-
I hardly think there is some conspiracy to represent Taiwan discs as made in Japan. I'm sure that would be considered fraud of somesort and it would be too easy to prove. The Taiwanese discs don't even have the same media code; they're RITEKG05.

Worse case is these are some sort of "stock" stickers to fix a UPC code mess-up, and the Japan info is on there (but wrong).
Why not peel one off and see what is printed underneath? I would.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I think I will do that. I'll stop by again and see what I can find out. If they are Japan, I'm gonna get some.

LS, I thought you once said that Maxell's media was excellent, regardless of where it was produced? Or are those days gone now?
-
If I'm not mistaken, when LS refers to Maxell media he speaks of discs actually manufactured by Hitachi-Maxell, not discs made by other manufacturers that Maxell rebrands. True Maxell media is only made in Japan.
-
Yes. Maxell is made in Japan.
The "Maxell" brand is used both on Maxell discs as well as Ritek and Ricoh and TY and others.

I have seen stickers on the Maxell's packaging that also say MIT (but with no upc code on the sticker though) . I think the reason maxell are putting these stickers is because the actual writing on the packaging can hardly be read anymore on these 8X spindles (especially when it comes to reading those small and sometimes smudged letters that indicate the country of production). I mean you could alway figure out if they are MIT or MIJ without the stickers, but definitely not at arms length.
Is it just me? or should i have my eyes checked?
