    The Pioneer DVR-H533S claims to support DVD-RW media up to 6X speed.

    My LG 4163B drive on the PC claims to support DVD-RW media up to 8X speed.

    The highest speed DVD-RW media I've found online is 4X.

    Any idea on a timeframe for higher speed DVD-RW media?

    Your LG writer supports 6x DVD-RW and 8x DVD+RW.
    6x Verbatim DVD-RW and 8x Ricoh DVD+RW are already available, at least in Europe.
