I've been using DTOX for my compression and was wondering what other software is out there that works just as good as DTOX or maybe comes close.

Since the new version of DTOX came out, I've been unable to use the 1.4.1 version I have to compress my dvd's with the arccos encryption. Is there any freeware thats as good as DTOX?

Just as good?! I cant find one that works better than dvd2one but here you go...

    Popcorn, DVDRemaster, FastDVDCopy, FFMPEGX

however none of these are "free"

Im confused.... I have every version that has ever come out of dvd2one and even though I upgrade I still can use the older versions. Why cant you use 1.4.1??? And whats wrong with 1.4.2 that makes you want to use the old one still?

To clarify, I can still use 1.4.1 since its registered but I can't use 1.4.2; I thought the SN for the 1.4.1 would work for 1.4.2 but it doesn't. I just don't see any justification for having to pay each time an update is available.

And since some of my new dvd's have the arccos encryption, I'll need to use the 1.4.2 version, am I right about this???

    JSA13,
if your serial number is legit, you can email Erwin Van DB over at DVD2one.com and simply ask him about your serial number. I'm not implying anything, BUT
I have been a registered user since version 1.11,
and I have ALWAYS used the same serial number,
    never had to get another.

I also have been able to keep both the old
    and the new versions
on the same machine, and test the new to
insure it works to my satisfaction,
    BEFORE tossing the old one.

And yes, for the record, you need v.1.42 to handle
    ArrCCoss Discs.

I hadn't realized that 1.4.2 was out -- I just downloaded it and it opens up just fine and says I'm registered, so at least on my machine, 1.4.2 works just fine with the serial number I received upon purchase of version 1.0.0.

Agreed. I have never had to "re-enter" my serial. I just download the app and run the latest version and it works like any other time.

I'm fairly new to this whole thing so version 1.4.1 is my earliest version to which I have my sn for.

I got 1.4.2 and I can't just run the app like Galatica stated. The s/w starts up and then the registration menu pops up. I've entered my info from 1.4.1 to 1.4.2 and it didn't work stating either the username or sn didn't match.

So am I missing something here to which I should be able to run 1.4.2 without having to enter anything in because my 1.4.1 still works just fine.

  9. Your serial number is stored in your DTOX prefs. You don't need to enter it again. Just launch the new veresion.

Not to accuse you, but it sounds like the sort of thing that could happen by using a pirated serial# that's being detected and rejected by the software. If you've purchased a legitimate serial# for 1.4.1 then I don't understand why you're not working directly with the developer to resolve the issue of it not working with 1.4.2.

  11. If you do have a real serial number, one that was given to you by the developer when you purchased DVD2oneX, and 1.4.2 doesn't work, I suppose there might be some sort of weirdness happening for you that's hard to pin down.

Usually in these cases, it is suggested that you back up your DVD2oneX files, then do a search for both visible AND invisible files and trash everything involved with DVD2oneX.

Then install 1.4.1 again, enter your purchased serial number and see that it works properly. Then install 1.4.2 and it should work just fine as it is dealing with a fresh preferences file.

Let us know if this helps!

Hey SJK, no offense taken...After TerryJ suggestion, I have sent an email to the developer and just waiting for reply.

Ladd, I actually deleted the 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 version to start clean; I simply placed both apps in trash and emptied it. Is this the best way to do this step? I'm not sure how to do a search for visible and invisible files for these two? I can do a search and I see what comes up but how would I check for invisible files?

    Cmd F to find.
Search Everywhere in the where section
in the Name field type DVD2ONE
Select the "+" sign on your find window
in the second drop menu, select Visibility, then in the next visible and invisible files
    Search.

Sorry for posting so late but I guess better late than never...

I got my DTOX 1.4.2 to work after the suggestion by Ladd and assistance by TerryJ...I did the search for visible and invisible dtox files and I noticed there were two prefs found during the search...Don't know if this was the problem or not but I re-installed 1.4.1 with my SN and then upgraded to the 1.4.2 and work straight away...I did the search again and this time there was only one prefs...

    Thanks for the help guys...

    Your welcome!

Yup, seems like the 1.42 was creating its own pref file,
rather than act as an "update" to 1.41.

    good work!

    for the record:
    outside of this forum,
    DVD2ONEX=Macintosh
    DVD2ONE=Windows

we usually refer to the original name
(dvd2one) often here, and it just be general consensus
that when we say that ( dvd2one) we REALLY mean
    (dvd2onex).

    other variants we use:

    DTOX
    DVD21
    DVD2onex
    DVD2one
    DVDTWOONEX

in this forum, they all point to DVD2ONEX.
