Are you really using Toast 6.0? The current version is 6.1.1 and the update is free at roxio.com. Roxio has changed Toast's performance a lot!

you will also need to add the DIVX 5.21 codec
to your system. And for even
minor editing, you will need Quicktime Pro.

  4. now ive updated toast to 6.1.1 and installed various codecs into quicktime. will i be able to make a watchable dvd from avis using the video option of toast? last time i tried i got no audio. i looked at quite a few threads on this forum but theyre too technical for me. also i have divx doctor 2 but when i doctor the avis quicktime plays the audio only. does this mean that toast will burn them like this?

means that there is a problem with the file if it didn't pass
    muster with Divx Doctor II.

    no.
Toast is built on Quicktime Architecture.

Now, if you encode using ffmepgx,
    then you don't use Quicktime.

Since you watched it with VLC, what did VLC say was the codec it used
    in VLC's Info window?

with video playing, perform a cmd ( apple key) -i,
    or choose Window-->Info.
An info box will appear, toggle any arrows to expose
    information.

post it here/retype what it says and post it here....

  11. sorry, also some of them seem to be DIV3 video.

i have managed with the xvid to get a watchable dvd with audio, but the qualitys not as good as the original avi, and even though the avis are about 100mb each, i can only fit 3 on a dvd.

is there a way to get toast to deinterlace as it encodes? and why does the finished product take up so much more room?

thanks for all the help so far.

If you want smaller sizes for your encoded mpeg2's I'd suggest using MPEG2 Works 4 to encode. I have no idea why Toast encodes take up so much space.

Toast only encodes in Constant Bit Rate (CBR) encoding, either one pass ( for Standard Quality) or Two Pass
for ( High Quality). Toast will also not encode large
file types "down" to accurately get say five or six onto
one disc....That is something you only find in the higher
realm of encoders, such as Compressor.

Based on Quicktime, Toast has to first go in and re-encode
the file to a Quicktime compatible type, "fixing"
the things that aren't QT Compatible, such as DIV3 video.

Once it does that, it encodes based upon your selection
to mpeg-2 and pcm ( AIFF) audio. PCM audio takes up
ALOT of disc space ( its uncompressed audio), space
that something like Compressor and A.Pack could balance nicely.

I make dvd's from avi's all the time with little or no problems at all. i go from avi to dvd via ffmpegx, then you just burn the resulting video_ts with toast.
