  1. I have thought about buying a cheap dvd recorder with the intent of copying digital video shot with my camcorder to dvd. A few questions..

    1. what type of format would a cheap dvd recorder (such as the $98 ilo) record in? Would there be terrible resolution degradation?

    2. how much dv would I be able to fit on one dvd?

This is an interim solution for me before I get a new computer, this way the kids can watch the videos when they want without having to hook up the camcorder to the tv...

As far as I know they only record in MPEG2 format. Degradation will occur because first your converting it to MPEG and second if it doesn't have a firewire input you will be recording from analog. If it's just a temporary solution it should be more than adequate. Check to the right under DVD recorders for comments and ratings.

That would depend on the DVD recorder and how much of quality loss is acceptable to you, they all have different settings. The more video you put on disc the lower the quality will be. 1.5 hours on regular DVD is usually good to fair quality.

Most DVD recorders seem to have a sweet spot setting of 2 hours for good quality.

  4. with any decent recorder there shouldn't be a noticeable quality loss if you stay with 2 hours or under.

  5. The Ilo DVDR05 is a poor quality recorder even at 1 hour per DVD (HQ). It's made by Cyberhome. I'd find something else such as a Pioneer or Panasonic.
People say the Ilo DVDR04 is made by LiteOn and is better then the DVDR05. It has other problems though.

I Agree. I've got the new Panny ES10. Does a great job in LP mode for most of the material I record

Ilo is a Wal Mart Brand. The 04 series is made by LiteOn. The 05 is made by cyberhome
I have a Ilo DVDRHD04 and it workes great [NO PROBLEMS]. Support is much bwtter than most. For VHS to DVD and copy prtection problems it can not be beat. It can be Hacked, most others cannot
The Ilo 04 series is out of production. The best bet is a LiteOn unit
Since the latest firmware update. The color on the ILO is as good as any and better then a Panasonic. The Pioneer is very good but it has its problems also
The Cyberhome is a good player [I have one] As a recorder it needs work.
