TOKYO, Jul 08, 2005 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Japanese electronics manufacturer Sharp Corp. says it has developed a technology to manufacture a new optical disc with 100 gigabytes of memory.
The memory capacity of the disc is more than that of 20 DVDs, which currently can store 4.7 gigabytes of data each, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported Friday.
Sharp's new disc can hold several times more data than a next-generation DVD, making it possible to record about nine hours of high-definition video footage.
It will take more time before the disc becomes commercially viable, Sharp's spokesman said.
Sharp developed the new disc based on the Blu-ray format being promoted by Sony Corp., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and others, which can hold 25 gigabytes of data. The rival HD-DVD format of Toshiba Corp. and others can store 15 gigabytes.

More space is good and all, but what about LONG-TERM STORAGE? Does it use the same type of easy-to-scratch plastic as DVD's? Or will it use a better plastic?

The problem with these new high storage systems that are showing up recently is that more than half of them will never see the light of day when it comes to the consumer.

I thought TDK already announced a 4-layer 100GB Blu-Ray disc! And at least we know that TDK is going to put their scratch-proof coating on their discs.
