CRT monitor vertical hold

Are there any internal adjustments on a CRT monitor to correct vertical hold problems? I have an HP monitor about 4-5 years old that is normally fine, however occasionally it will lose vertical hold. It will fix itself if I tap it on the side a few times, but this gets to be a nuisance having to do this all the time.

Also if I decide to get a new monitor, how good are the Insignia brand CRT's sold at Best Buy? Please don't try to sell me a LCD, I don't like them.

4-5 years may mean the monitor is finally going. Try using slightly different refresh rates, that may at least delay the problem a little longer. CRTs really only have about that much shelf life is used a lot, especially if they're larger ones or have been run at their max refresh rate.

I haven't heard anything about that brand of CRT, but I'm guessing it's BBs economy models that are rebranded something. I don't know who makes the tube in those but a quick search shows that the C170 17" CRT of theirs has a max res of 1280x1024 at 60Hz. That is horribly low refresh meaning you'd probably have to run at 1024x768 or less to get decent refresh of 75Hz or more.

I'd recommend going over to NewEgg and getting a ViewSonic CRT shipped to you. Pretty much every monitor of theirs is great, even the value ones. Yeah you'll have to pay a little more for shipping but if you weigh that against taxes at Best Buy you're still probably getting a better deal. I think BB still sells ViewSonic CRTs so compare the prices against each other and figure out which is the better deal.

Modern monitors usually don't have any V-hold control. Your HP should be serviced. Monitor being one of the most important components of your computer system, you need to buy one that's really good. Insignia 17" C170 flat-screen monitors are available at a starting price of $5.50 for bidding at eBay. Go for a good one, like Sony or Philips. ViewSonic is also good as rallynavvie suggests. You have to think about your eyes.

Look for one from viewsonic,nec, maybe even samsung. i currently have an nec multisync Fe1250+ 22inch flatscreen crt used from the $199 computer store for 136$ and it's awesome.
