  1. I have a DVD burner that is supposedly from I/O Magic (at least that's what the software says). When I check the actual drive properties it comes up as a Generic Dual DVD 4Max, which I think means it's another manufacturer's product that's been repackaged. I'm not sure which one, although Optorite seems very possible.

In the past, I've used different types of media on it and gotten 2x speed (which means a burn of a full dvd takes 30-40 minutes) for most. The one I use most often is Memorex DVD-R 8x (which gave me the 2x speed). I did try Imitation DVD+R 4x, which burned at my 4x speed, but I get far better deals on the Memorex so I've stuck with that.

However, I updated my firmware to 2.60I (the software I/O Magic offered (which upon checking, is identical to the firmware update offered for one type of Optorite burner)). With the same media I'd been using (and Nero Burning Rom) sometimes I'd get 4x speed, and then for others I would get the 2x speed (generally if I reflashed the drive with the 2.60I firmware I'd have the better speed until reboot).

My problem now is this. I'm using Memorex DVD+R 8x and I can't get Nero, no matter how many times I use the firmware mentioned, to allow burning at 4x speeds. I still have a couple of the Imitation DVD+R 4x, and they show as burning at 4x speed.

I checked this thread, which seems similar (if not the same) as my own, but I've tried more than one form of media on mine and didn't want to hijack another person's thread.

    Anyone have suggestions?

Check the specs on your burner. Many burn slower for - disks than for +.

Huh. That's odd, cuz it seems like, at least for Memorex media, that the oppisite is true for me (so far as I can at least get the - discs to burn at 4 sometimes).

What should I be checking for the information you mentioned?
