  2. it all depends on what your tv can support..if you live in north america, your tv is most likely NTSC, if you live in europe, your tv is most likely PAL..i think i am right on this one

  3. Pal should bring you the best results but as jupiter mentioned it all depends on ya tv. I know that alot of european tvs support both ntsc and pal, but i have no idea weather the US tvīs support pal signals?.

Anyways, i always enconde to ntsc, an old habit i guess but pal is slighty better...

  4. It's more than just the resolution of the two standards...

I don't have experience with SVCD, but with standard VCD, and the Panasonic MPEG Encoder, the same quality source (DVD) encoded as PAL and NTSC at standard VCD specs, the NTSC sample surprisingly looked sharper (by a little bit) on my TV.

    NTSC-FILM looked substantially sharper.

Although I'm unsure to why NTSC looked a little better than PAL, why NTSC-FILM looked much better than both is obvious. Although the resolution is relatively lower, the bitrate allocated to each pixel is substatially higher (about 25% higher in fact). Thus, more of the original detail can be preserved.
