  1. I recently downloaded Quicktime to view a video online and now every time I open an MPEG movie it automatically uses Quicktime, though I prefer WMP. I uninstalled Quicktime thinking that would help but now nothing will play because my browser (firefox) says that Quicktime is missing. How do I get WMP to be the player of my choice and not keep getting hijacked by Quicktime?

    Thanks for any help!

    Re-Install or Upgrade WMP.

As above, I would install Quicktime Alternative. That would get you the codec you need. Then right click on a quicktime file and set the default player to WMP if you really want it. QA is better, IMO. You might have to set the defaults for other video filetypes also if QT player changed them. Another good reason to avoid QT player. (And Real One player as it tends to do the same.)

  5. I uninstalled QT and then I tried to install QTA but it asked for windows NT, I have Win98. So I reinstalled WMP9 which worked fine and set everything back to default during setup but when I try to view an MPEG a message appears on my screen saying Quicktime failed to initialise error #0, please make sure Quicktime is properly installed on this computer.

Anybody got any ideas how to get this insidious piece of crap off my computer?

    Thanks!

Sounds like QT is still associated with .MPG. You can go to 'Tools' >'Folder Options' > 'Filetypes' and scroll down to .mpg or it's variations and change any and all MPEG filetypes except .mov (Quicktime) to open in WMP. If they are already set as WMP, then I'm not sure, maybe a registry adjustment. Take a look at filetypes first, though.

  7. Thanks for the advice, I did change the mpegfile association to WMP but it still had problems, so I took another look and went into plug-ins and disabled an mpeg plugin that I believe was associated with QT.

It still annoys me that QT can hijack your mpeg files and having to delve deep to get rid of it (uninstaller being not enough). Well at least I can have a bitchfest at my brother in law as he is a Mac user and always goes on about how lame PC's and windows products are.

It isn't only QT that can highjack filetypes. Real Player can do it and a few others. When you install the programs you can usually set what filetypes they associate with. I think WMP is the worst culprit. I would just as soon purge it from my system, but that's all but impossible. Thanks, Microsoft.
